Founded in 1912 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Republic of China (ROC) has seen its rise and decline, from the successor state of the Qing Empire, through the warlord era and the 1937 Sino-Japanese War, and finally its relocation to the Island of Taiwan after its defeat in the Chinese Civil War. This video explores the leaders of the ROC from 1912 to 2020.
The map shows the approximate territory controlled by the ruler at the end of his reign. Maps and Photos are from Wikipedia.

Is Taiwan A Country or Part of China?
A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC.
The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.

What Happened to the Old Chinese Flag(s)?
China's red and gold flag, the Wǔxīng Hóngqí in Mandarin, is well known as the Chinese national symbol, though it only came into use in the late 1940's, at which time many other flags had been used to represent China from the Qing Dynasty's 5-clawed dragon on a yellow field, through the flags of the Xinhai and Wuchang Rebellions and that designed by Sun Yat-sen which is still Taiwan's current flag.

Republic of China [Nationalist China] (1912–1949) Military Song: "英勇的戰士" (Heroic Warriors)
"The Republic of China was a sovereign state in East Asia that occupied the territories of modern China, and for part of its history Mongolia and Taiwan. It was founded in 1912, after the Qing dynasty, the last imperial dynasty, was overthrown in the Xinhai Revolution. The Republic's first president, Sun Yat-sen, served only briefly before handing over the position to Yuan Shikai, former leader of the Beiyang Army. His party, then led by Song Jiaoren, won the parliamentary election held in December 1912. Song was assassinated shortly after, and the Beiyang Army led by Yuan Shikai maintained full control of the government in Beijing. Between late 1915 and early 1916, Yuan tried to reinstate the monarchy, before abdicating after popular unrest. After Yuan's death in 1916, members of cliques ...

Additional info and clarifications about the video:
The first election in 1911 was held during the Xinhai Revolution, in order to create the Provisional Government of the Republic of China. However, Yuan Shikai would later declare himself emperor of China. Later the Chinese nationalist party or Kuomintang would rule the Republic of China, holding their first election in 1948. These elections were until 1996 indirect elections. Furthermore, the Kuomintang was in a civil war with the PRC (Communists) which because of military failures on the mainland would force the Republic of China to flee to Taiwan as you can see in the video. Also, despite losing UN recognition in 1971, Taiwan/ROC still claim the be the true Legitimate China.
If you do not recognize the ROC as the true legitimate China, I made another video showing the elections of the People's Republic of China. Which you can see here: https://youtu.be/q3ctGTeuNUE

After Yuan's death in 1916, members of cliques in the former Beiyang Army claimed their autonomy and clashed with each other. During this period, the authority of the central government was weakened by a restoration of the Qing dynasty.
In 1925, Sun's Kuomintang established a rival government in the southern city of Guangzhou together with the fledgling Communist Party of China. The economy of the north, overtaxed to support warlord adventurism, collapsed in 1927–28. General Chiang Kai-shek, who became KMT leader after Sun's death, started his military Northern Expedition campaign in order to overthrow the government in Beijing. The central government was overthrown in 1928 and Chiang established a new nationalist government in Nanjing. In April 1927, he massacred the communists in Shanghai, which forced the communists into armed rebellion, marking the beginning of the Chinese Civil War.
There was industrialization and modernization, but also conflict between the Nationalist government in Nanjing, the communists, remnant warlords, and the Empire of Japan. Nation-building took a backseat to war with Japan when the Imperial Japanese Army launched an offensive against China in 1937 that turned into a full-scale invasion. After the unconditional surrender of Japan in 1945, fighting quickly resumed between the KMT and the Communists, with both sides receiving foreign assistance due to the ongoing friction between the Soviet Union and the United States. In 1947, the Constitution of the Republic of China replaced the Organic Law of 1928 as the country's fundamental law. In 1949, the Communists established the People's Republic of China, overthrowing the Nationalist government on the mainland, who retreated to Taiwan, and relocated its capital from Nanking to Taipei."
